As a musician, it can be hard to know where to turn and what to do when it comes to social media. Pretty much every successful musician has some form of presence on social media. It’s obvious that social media holds the key to your success and growth, but you only have so much time, how do you know what to do? We’ve constructed a top 5 lists of things you can do on social media to get your audience excited and create that all important growth of your fanbase.
1. Give insight into your life
On social media the clue is in the name. You must keep things ‘social’. Treat your audience like your friends and engage them. People want to see what happens behind the scenes in your life, hear stories and learn more about you on a personal level.
So what does that mean? It means sharing images and stories your live audiences wouldn’t usually see. Images of you on the road, in the studio, short videos of you singing in the car or sharing a track you like (not your own!).
By humanising yourself you open up your audience to a new level of connection that would not be possible through your music alone. This means people begin to feel closer to you and creates a deeper connection with you.
That deeper connection leads to people looking forward to both your posts and your music. But most importantly it gets people talking about you and sharing your work.
Don’t waste valuable space on social media profiles
In your social media profiles, use every space you have to tell your story. Leave NOTHING blank.
The cover space for instance is an excellent place to put up information about your upcoming tours, a new music video you’re about to release, etc.
You must also regularly change your cover image so it is always up to date with relevant info, from your upcoming album, to tour dates, to important news. Doing this keeps your page fresh and interesting, so even regular visitors get a new experience or offer on a regular basis.
Encourage people to connect, ALWAYS
Ensure you keep your social media profiles in mind at all times.
Use every opportunity to encourage people to follow you, from radio interviews to live performances.
If you don’t want to sound desperate it’s very easy to give people something for following you. Tell them they can download a bonus track or be the first to get ticket offers on your next gig if they follow you on social media.
You might also want to encourage people to sign up to a newsletter if you have one. This gives you direct access to personal contact information outside of social media which can be very valuable as trends on social media change.
Increase post quality, not quantity!
Many people think that simply increasing the amount they post is how you get more followers. But that could not be more wrong.
As a musician, will releasing hundreds of tracks be better than releasing one AMAZING album you have worked hard on? Of course not!
You need to have a very clear strategy and take time to craft your posts, using hashtags that are appropriate for the subject but also will get you post noticed above all the others in people’s feed.
The planning that goes into a post is actually more important than the post itself. It’s important to keep a close eye on all the current trends on social media on a daily basis and ensure that the post you put out there is absolutely the best and most interesting post possible. This means engaging text, high quality and relevant hashtags and images that stand out.
You also want to think very carefully about what questions to ask to ensure you get the most comments and shares as possible. This can be the difference between getting thousands of shares and comments or none at all.
Be consistent & authentic
Most musicians find it hard to keep a consistent flow of quality posts going out on a weekly basis.
Sometimes a whole week or even a month can pass by without posting and update on your page.
This is social suicide and will wind you up losing fans quicker than you can find them. Social media is a busy place and people will forget you as fast as they found you if you don’t keep your posting schedule consistent.
Keeping a consistent and interesting schedule on social media will keep your fans engaged, encourage sharing and most importantly create the exponential growth you need to make those all important album and ticket sales.
