How Tradespeople Can Get More Clients With Social Media
February 25, 20193 Reasons Messenger is the Best Marketing Solution for Restaurants

As a personal trainer it can be tough to find new clients, especially with so much competition in the health and fitness industry.
Perhaps you’ve tried posting on social media in the past but your page is just not getting the traction you want.
Maybe you’ve tried flyering and that has also been a bit of a flop.
First things first, I’m going to assume you are genuinely a kick-ass PT that is motivated and willing to do whatever it takes to be successful.
If you’re an unmotivated, uninspired personal trainer who wants to take shortcuts to make money, stop reading here, you’ll not like what you hear (hint: like building muscle, it involves consistent effort over time).
Step 1: Know your customer
If you want to create a solid foundation of customers you need to know your ideal customer inside out.
When I first speak to most PTs about who their ideal client is the common response is ‘everyone is my ideal client’, ‘I rule no one out.’
Firstly, I want to tell you right now trying to aim your services at everyone is a f**king stupid approach.
You simply end up not appealing to any one ‘community’ of people and therefore will never stand out as a great choice to anyone.
So, before you say that you want to appeal to everyone on earth, laser focus your clients.
You need to select a niche within personal training so when someone in that niche finds you, you are seen as the answer to all their problems.
So what niche? What clients do you choose?
There are endless niches in the health industry that you can focus on as a personal trainer but it’s important to go about picking your niche methodically.
I could write a whole book on niche selection but you can just boil a lot of it down to one simple strategy.
In a spreadsheet or list, write down some possible niches down the left side of the page.
Then create 3 columns; Personal interest, Pain Point (I'll explain below don't worry) and potential Profit / Competition.
Then what you are going to do is is rate each column out of 5.
For personal interest, rate how genuinely interested you are in the niche out of 5.
For the pain point column, rate from 1 to 5 how frustrated this sector of your market is with a problem that you solve (i.e how much do over 60’s need a trainer, a diet plan, an easy to follow fitness course etc)
For the potential profit column, think about whether the people in your target market would pay handsomely for the service you could offer. Does your audience have money? Are there already a tonne of options in this niche? Can you stand out?
An example of the table can be found below (sorry vegans, you lost!):
Once you have scored your niche, pick the winner and move on to creating an ideal customer avatar.

Step 2: Create your brand
We’re going to start at ground zero here. You may have a social media page of your own, but is it specifically for your PT brand?
If you want to use social media to attract clients to your PT services you need to start by aiming all your guns at that goal.
You have 2 options for this, use your personal profile to promote yourself and spread awareness, or if you prefer to keep your personal profile personal, then you need to set up a profile for your brand. As for what social media platforms you use, you need to consider where your audience hang out, but in most cases Facebook and Instagram are going to be a great place to start.
Step 3: Create a low barrier offer
When people find you for the first time on social media, will they be ready to sign up to a PT package?
Maybe. But probably not. Yet.
Does this mean we should ignore them?
No way!
To go from social media discovery to paying client is quite a step for anyone.
This is where you need to take people into your ecosystem gently, with a low cost (or preferably free) product or service offer.
So what product or service can you offer people for free to introduce them to your amazing brand?
Here are a few ideas:
- A facebook accountability group
- A free training plan
- A free diet planning call
- A webinar on fitness goals
- A free short course that teaches how to solve a problem
The key with this offer is not to make money but to bring people into your ecosystem and shock them with value.
If people try your low barrier offers and are impressed then there is no doubt that a percentage of these people will be prepared to buy something substantial from you.
But, to make buying easy for people, you must make your main or high-ticket product seem like a natural progression from your low barrier offer.
So joining the group may show you what you need to do to create a training plan but if people want it done for them, with more accountability and instruction, that is where they can hire you privately. Step 4: Document, engage and create traffic
This is where the magic happens, it’s also where most people fail to put the effort required in to get the results.
So, if you can nail this stage then you will instantly be ahead of 90% of PTs out there.
Get your camera out and start offering high value to your audience.
How do you offer value?
Documentation:
Provide insight into your life through documentation. You may be used to showing off you recent restaurant meal but this needs to be more personal. Get in front of the camera and show the world what you are up to, offer tips, thoughts.
Professional Video and Images:
Provide professional images and promotional videos to your audience designed to educate them on your business and values. This could be a set of drill videos to help solve the problem you are aligned with in your niche, client testimonials, quotes, advice etc.
Does this mean you have to film yourself on a daily basis? Not necessarily. Try to film and produce as much as you can in a single day when it comes to the professional videos.
As for documentation, this is simply going to have to be something you get in the habit of, it does not need to be a daily story or post, but the more you can put yourself out there the more rapport you will build with your audience and the more interest you will generate in your niche. But, are you ready to do the work?
So that’s it, follow these 4 steps and I can guarantee you will see a huge uplift in your success.
But remember you actually have to do the f**king work if you want to make this a reality.
